Overview

At The Cedars we know that addiction is a progressive, incurable and sometimes a fatal disorder, but it can be managed so individuals can lead productive lives. Like many other medical conditions, addiction is subject to relapse. Relapse is a reality of addiction, not a requirement in order to recover. Stopping the using is just the first step in the healing process. Staying stopped is what we help the addict to achieve. As recovery is a process and so is relapse.

RELAPSE PREVENTION

The process of relapse usually begins long before the "event" of using. When the addict thinks they "have it licked", lets up on disciplines, and makes decisions without some feedback, the process of relapse begins. We offer the most comprehensive relapse prevention programing from trained experts in the field.

The cognitive behavioral approach we use will help the resident, and their families, learn to identify symptoms associated with relapse. These symptoms are visible in the addicts attitudes and behaviors. Anger, resentment, blame, dishonesty, hanging around using people, not following through with continuing care plans and impatience are just some of warning signs. One thing we know is the addict needs to change their playgrounds, their playmates and their playthings. This will take time, effort and a relapse prevention plan that can be followed on a daily basis.
